重力レンズにより時間差で出現した超新星像をもとに宇宙の膨張速度を測定

重力レンズ効果によって、遠方で発生した超新星爆発が約1年の時間差で複数回観測された現象を解析することで、宇宙の膨張速度をあらわす「ハッブル定数」を精密に測定したとする研究が発表されました。この手法によりハッブル定数が測定されたのは初めてのことです。ミネソタ大学のパトリック・ケリー氏や千葉大学の大栗真宗氏らの研究チームによる研究です。

銀河団など質量の大きな天体のまわりでは空間がゆがみ、「重力レンズ」と呼ばれる効果をもたらします。空間のゆがみによって光の経路が曲がるため、奥にある天体の像がゆがんで見えたり、いくつかに分かれて見えたりします。

こちらの画像は、50億光年以上の距離にある銀河団「MACS J1149.6+2223」をハッブル宇宙望遠鏡がとらえたものです。枠内は銀河団の一部を拡大したもので、より遠方の95億光年先で発生した超新星が4つに分かれて見えているのが映っています（矢印）。超新星の4つの像は2014年11月11日に発見されました。これらの4つの像は1か月以内の短い時間差で出現していました。

この超新星は、重力レンズ効果による超新星の光の到達時間の差を用いてハッブル定数を測定する手法を1964年に提唱したSjur Refsdal氏にちなんで「レフスダール」と名付けられました。レフスダールの像は、半年〜数年以内にもう1つ出現すると予測されていました。

研究チームは、5番目の像のモニター観測を続け、超新星像の明るさの変化などを詳細に測定しました。そして慎重に解析を進めた結果、ハッブル定数の値を64.8+4.4-4.3km/s/Mpcと報告しました。

ハッブル定数は、宇宙背景放射の測定から低めの値（約67km/s/Mpc）が得られている一方で、近傍の銀河までの距離測定によって高めの値（約74km/s/Mpc）が得られています。両者の違いは、現代宇宙論の大きな謎の1つとなっています。

今回、重力レンズ効果による超新星の光の到達時間の差を用いる方法で求めたハッブル定数の値は、宇宙背景放射をもとにした値に近いものでした。ただ今回の研究結果は議論を完全に解決するものではなく、銀河までの距離測定による値を排除するものではないとのことです。

今後、ジェイムズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡や、2024年に観測開始予定のベラ・ルービン天文台での広域モニター観測により、重力レンズ超新星が数多く発見され、重力レンズによる時間差を利用したハッブル定数の測定例が増えることが期待されています。
